What makes you feel nostalgic?
Music from my childhood. Specifically, almost anything by Crowded House, Bic Runga’s Get Some Sleep, Goldenhorse’s Northern Lights, and Tim Finn’s Before & After album. Oh, and Fat Freddy’s Drop.
Beautiful Collision
If I’m speaking a different language, you’re missing out. These are just some of the songs that propel me back in time to my childhood living room, dancing with my sisters to CDs in my dad’s SONY 5 Disc Multiplayer. It looked something like this, and it makes me so happy.

I remember the whirring and clicking noises it used to make as it randomised the song across up to five different CDs of your choosing. Looking back, Kiwiana music seems to have been the soundtrack of my early years. I bet it still works, and I have a funny feeling Dad might still have it somewhere… or so I hope.
I get nostalgic about my high school choir when a song we used to perform together floats into my head. I get nostalgic about attending Christian kids camps and spending summers in Whangamatā when I see photos of little me, my baby sisters, and my younger, less experienced parents. Though we’ve all aged, seen and been through some stuff, I find myself only coming to appreciate them more and more as I move through my mid-twenties.
I like to dwell inside the good memories where I can, especially when present and future make me feel uneasy or overwhelmed at times. What are your nostalgia albums? I’m always looking for song recommendations.
Ya Binti يا بنتي | My Girl
I wanted to finish here by introducing a new artist I have stumbled across in my hunt to further diversify my music listening habits. This is Rasha Nahas. Last year, she released her first album in her native language, Arabic. She’s Palestinian and based in Berlin, so basically, she’s just an all-round badass and talented creative. I want to buy her CD, support her work, and maybe even see her live someday! I am lucky enough to be in Berlin this month, so you never know…
