Submission (2022 Poem)

24/1/2022

Out of nowhere
she slits my skin
daggers in my back
and I stoop, stunned.

It’s all at once
it’s thick and it’s oozing
over all my well-kept, compartmentalised thoughts

no,
this one commands my attention
no dodging, just pangs
rancid and pungent
cold and heavy

I have no choice but
to slump forwards in submission
grazing the ground
allowing her to consume me
close herself in around me

I’m used to being alone
but it’s the loneliness
that strikes like this,
at random
and with no sign
of relent
